Full Time Entrepreneur

January 6, 2006 on 9:07 am | In Entrepreneur |

Well I am now a Full Time Entrepreneur.

I worked my last day of full-time-permanent-employment on the 23rd of December 2005 and am now engaged in full time entrepreneurial activities - read: working all day and all night (at least until cash flow becomes steady).

It was pretty sad leaving my job as they were a really good company to work for and I learnt a lot from them. However, I know I have made the right decision and am really excited about what will unfold this year.

Over the last few months I have been involved with setting up a start up software company with three other partners to develop and market a product for a really niche industry (more about this at a later date).

I have also been setting up some information websites for my own business and working on the details of a couple of other websites with my long term business partner (who is also involved with the software startup).

The big picture plan is to get the software startup running smoothly, create revenue from information websites, develop software utilities to sell and promote websites with, and then get involved in other business ventures.

If anyone is thinking about doing the same and is in a similar position to myself - i.e. Mortgage, 2 children, planning on having more kids, embarking on uncertain ventures, perhaps a little bit crazy - I’d be keen to hear from you. Perhaps we could set up some kind of website for people in the same boat!

Hence, this is the first post for just over 2 months!

  1. […] Dominic Foster has officially gone full time as an entrepreneur in 2006. This is a particularly brave move for him given he has a few ahh, commitments, including children and a mortgage. As proud as I am of being a full time internet business entrepreneur I only have to look after myself at this point in time so I don’t look quite as daring. Congratulations Dominic, I hope everything goes well for you! […]

  2. Congratulations Dominic! I too have kids and a wife to take care of. It is my dream to quit the 9 to 5 and do only freelance work. The only way to get ahead is to be in business for yourself. The hardest part about it is that you have to be making alot more money on your side projects before you can quit the day job. Maybe we can start some sort of co-op blog for dads who want to be entrepreneurs.

  4. Well done Dominic. It is a difficult thing to do and your cashflow is something you have to give a lot of attention to. Having said that think of the example you are giving your kids - I have two young children and I have regular conversations with the older one about business generally and my business specifically.

I hope 2006 is successful for you :-)

  5. Hi Dominic: We’ve got three young children, and the ever-looming mortgage. Packing in the day job to become a full-time web designer would be ideal, but even thinking of the risk makes me break out in a sweat.

You’re a brave man, and I hope your venture works out for you and your family. Maybe I’ll be joining the entrepreneurial ranks later this year too!

  9. […] Woo-hoo, I hate formality. Since becoming a Full Time Entrepreneur i have only worn long trousers and socks once (actually it is one-and-a-half because I recently went to a wedding but forgot to take my socks so ended up in suit, shoes, but no socks). I think any relationship works best when there is human-to-human connection behind them. […]

  10. […] Now that the initial full time developement drive is finished for the project that enabled me to become a full time entrepreneur is over, I have had to devote my time to other income sources. So for the last couple of weeks I have been ProBlogging on my other websites. And of course, by doing this, I have been working from home and finding some great benefits of this working environment.
