AdSenseLog - Desktop AdSense Account Application

In my last post, Michael Cheneys AdSense Videos (Update), you can see a graph of how my AdSense earnings have improved over the last couple of months.

I forgot to mention that I made this graph really easily using a piece of software called AdSenseLog - a really neat piece of software that is produced by MetalGrass Software.

AdSenseLog runs on you Windows desktop (not sure if there is a Linux or Apple version), and is able to log into your AdSense account and get pretty much all the data you can get when you are logged into AdSense in your browser.

You then have the ability to dive into your data and do all sorts of analysis on it and have it spat out into neat graphical images.

I used to have to do this by exporting data into CSV format and then loading it up in Excel, and then making a graph from that.

Anyhow, AdSense log is available for a free 30 day trial download. If you earn less than $50 a month with AdSense then it is free to use. The basic version costs $20 and can be used with accounts that earn up to $250 a month. The pro version is $50 and can be used for unlimited earnings.

Another cool thing is that you can leave it running in your system tray and set it to check your account intermitently. If your earnings increase, then it will notify you with a sound.

Back at the beginning of May, I bought Michael Cheyneys Adsense Videos and said that I would report back on the outcome of implementing his techniques. I actually said that I would report back after a month, but I’ve been tied up in a pretty intense consultancy project. Well that project is coming to an end and I have a bit of spare time, so here we go.

Rather than go into a long blog post about how my adsense income has almost doubled on a month-on-month basis, I decided to make a graph of my earnings:

As you can see, there is a drop at the end where things have stabalised for this month. I think the reason for this is because I have not been marketing my websites due to consultancy restraints on my time. However, it’s now time to get back into it.

I will hopefuly report back with another earnings update soon.

Google Bread

I think that my month of ProBlogging from home is really starting to affect my family.

Here in New Zealand we have a popular brand of bread that is called ‘Vogels’.

We buy an organic brand for our kids as it is not chewy and we reckon that since it is organic then it must be better for them than regular bread.

My wife and I buy ‘Vogels’ bread for ourselves as we prefer a wholemeal grain style bread.

Today, my 3 year old son asked if he could have ‘Googles bread’ for breakfast.

Perhaps I’d better find offices somewhere.

Michael Cheneys AdSense Videos

I have not been one for buying E Books that promise riches and success, but on Friday I purchase Michael Cheneys Adsense Videos.

3.28767 is the first Google AdSense Magic Number

There are probably as many AdSense Magic Numbers as there are AdSense publishers. For me, my AdSense Magic Number is 3.28767 and it probably was for everyone else as they began their AdSense adventure whether they knew it or not.

So Why 3.28767?

Because that is the average amount you must make each day to receive an AdSense cheque each month - Based upon:

(100 x 12) / 365 = 3.28767

Other AdSense Magic Numbers

For Darren Rowse it may have been 15,849.60 - When he receive his cheque for $15,849.60 in August 2005.

For Jason Calcanis it was 2739 - When weblogs.inc was on target for generating $1,000,000 in AdSense revenue per year by hitting $2,739 a day for the first time.

Drew documents some smaller and perhaps more easily achievable goas with AdSense Magic Numbers of 2 then 5 then 10 then 20.

It’s official, He’s a 4 Figure Online Worker!

Big congratulations go out to Drew who runs Work Online from Home - How I did it.

I first came across this blog when I started blogging myself back in July. Drew had set up his blog at the same time with similar intentions to myself - i.e. to earn some cash from the internet. In fact, I believe we were both inspired by Darren Rowse’s Slashdotting about his Google AdSense cheque.

However, he is now pulling down about $25 a day in AdSense (about ten times my daily average) and some more from other Ad providers and affilliate programs. He has published a graph of his earnings too.

The great thing is though, that this guy started his online business because of being made redundant and has been blogging to document his journey so far.

I believe he has really achieved something special - A shining example of what can be accomplished when you have to!

Also, He is from Dunedin in New Zealand.

I am from Auckland - So Drew, let me know if you are ever coming up to visit the Jaffa’s, I’d like to buy you a beer and pick your brains about your online strategy!!

Chitika eMiniMalls

After reading what Darren Rowse wrote about Chitika eMiniMalls - decided to apply for them myself.

Well, I received the confirmation that I had been accepted today and have configured my Trader Knowledge website to start showing them so that I can see how they fare against AdSense.

They are really easy to set up - very much like creating the Adsense units - and putting them onto Trader Knowledge was just a case of replacing the AdSense code with the Chikita code.

It will be interesting to see what happens - I’ll post back with the results after a week or two of testing.

An AdSense Funny

One thing I really like to do as soon as I publish a new Blog Post is to quickly click on the Post link so that the whole post appears on one page. The enjoyment I get out of this is to see what adverts AdSense serves up for the content of the Blog Post.

Yesterdays post about The Hypomanic Entrepreneurs was a classic. As soon as I loaded it in it’s own page, there were ads for depression - and get this - an ad for Dog Eating Disorders.

Adsense Tweaks

I have been mentioning for a few days that I have been spending some time Tweaking the AdSense that appears here and on my Nicolas Darvas Website.

One of the biggest tasks was placing an 250 x 250 AdSense Box that appeared in just the first post of a displayed web page. If anyone is inerested in doing this themselves, then here is a brief description of how I did it.

The most important thing was to hack the index.php file in the current theme. What I needed to achieve was to insert the AdSense box into only the first post and not any of the subsequent ones.

So, to achieve this, I had to put a counter variable at the begining of the index.php file - I hope it doesn’t get too geeky!:

Next, I had to scroll down through index.php to find the start of the <div> tag which handles the style for each post - In my current Theme, it is:

Once I had found this, I pasted my AdSense code immediately before it - with some PHP and a style wrapped around it - The PHP made sure only one block would be displayed and the style would place it in the right area of the post. Here is the code:

Basically, the first line of this code asks is there an AdSense Box here?. Because the showAdSense variable is set to True - then the answer to this question is Yes - so, the AdSense code is inserted into the HTML for the page.

At the end of the AdSense insertion, there is a piece of PHP code that then sets the showAdSense variable to False - so that the when it comes to insert the next post and the page asks if there is an AdSense box - the answer will be No.

And that - believe it or not - is all there is to it. Of course don’t be fooled by how easy it is - Remember to ALWAYS back-up any files you are working on when Hacking your Blogging Software. I know from bitter experience the pain of trying to unpick crappy code because you can’t restore to the original version.

Oh - and I’ve inserted all those XXXXXXXX’s in the AdSense block where my AdSense ID goes. If you would really like to show my ads on your pages - please let me know as I’ll be only to happy to oblige!
