The Seven Deadly Sins of Blogging
August 12, 2005 on 12:33 pm | In 31 Days to a Better Blog, Blogging | 2 CommentsHere are my Seven Deadly Sins of Blogging. It is not a comprehensive list – I’m sure there are many more.
Try using it as a start to see where you might be going wrong with your Blogging.
Have fun!
- Apathy – If Apathy is your poison then read Declaring War on Blog Apathy by Darren Rowse. Nuff said.
- Purposelessness – Why are you writing that Blog? You started Posting about your cool new Web Affiliate Business – it was great! – but now all we are hearing about is your cats! If this is happening to you then why not start another Blog? It could open up a whole new Area of Opportunities.
- Untruthfulness – If you are lying on your Blog then you will not build Trust with your readers and they will leave. If you are lying about other Bloggers, then this is just plain nasty, and I suggest you re-assess your Personal Values.
- Procrastination – I’ll write that post this evening.. actually, I’ll do it after Desperate Housewives.. Bedtime all ready? I’ll do it in the morning. If you have Procrastination Problems, then try checking out Steve Pavlinas Blog. You could start with Dynamic Planning.
- Plagiarism – no.. No.. NO! This is just Lazy and could get you into a Lot of Trouble!
- Dreariness – Your Blogging Web site just looks awful – and you are just plain embarrassed about what people might think about it. Well – So What!! It’s content that matters anyway. If it really is bothering you, why not try a different Theme or Style. Perhaps you could learn a new skill such as CSS and make some changes yourself – Which you can then Blog About.
- Displeasure – When you started, it was so much fun. Now it seems such a burden – writing a post seems more like school homework than a form of self expression. Perhaps you should re-evaluate your Blogging Purpose. Try and remember why you started Blogging in the first place.
Like I said, this is not an exhaustive list.
Can you think of any others?

Interesting. I would have expected a list of things that indicate bad decorum, like writing about co-workers and personal issues, instead of self-help for the disinterested. I sense that a lot of online writers are becoming weary of self-imposed expectations to write more often than inspiration serves.

[...] OK, I’ll go first. The Seven Deadly Sins of Blogging was the first list of tips that I ever wrote. It is quite special for me because Darren Rowse referenced it in his post 31 Days to Building a Better Blog – Day 14 which resulted in my blog getting a large surge in traffic. [...]
