Blog Mentors

August 9, 2005 on 9:57 pm | In 31 Days to a Better Blog, Blogging |

At times in my life when I have been learning a new skill, I have always found that it really pays to watch what experts in the field are doing - many would refer to these experts as mentors.

Here are some people I regard as my Blog Mentors - and why I have unwittingly assigned them this task:

  • Darren Rowse - I like to feed off his knowledge, and I respect how he is willing to share this knowledge. Also, he emailed me and mentioned me in a post when I posted a comment on his Blog announcing my 31 Days to a Better Blog project. Here’s a post from the first in a series that he is Blogging about SEO - Search Engine Optimization Tips for Blogs
  • Steve Pavlina - I always thought that Self Development was a bit of a cheesy topic. However, Steve has quoshed my belief with the quality of his Blog subject matter. Also, he hails from a geek background - You can find some of his original articles at Dexterity Software. Here’s a recent post from Steve - Freeing Mental RAM - that corresponds with my thoughts on Blog Stubbing and using a Notebook.
  • Seth Godin is a bestselling author, entrepreneur and agent of change - according to the contact page on his Blog. To tell you the truth though, I find it hard to convey what Seth does - apart from a special sort of Marketing. I like what Seth has to say because a lot of his work (but by no means all) is focused on and around the internet. If you are unfamiliar with Seths Blog - heres a post to get you aquainted - The seduction of “good enough”
  • The guys at Venturus - I just like the articles they Blog about, the layout of their site and how they Blog - they write an introduction with a link to a full post. They have a Blog/Forum thing going on which interests me. They have some good advice on the art of Blogging in this post - Perserverance Is Key When Blogging.

So those guys are what I call my Blog Mentors. They are not the only Blogs I subscribe to, but they are a few of what stands out in my news reader.

But …ssshhh… don’t tell them, I haven’t actually asked them to help me yet.

  4. Pretty good group you got there Dominic - pretty hard not to learn a thing or two from that select group - although I haven’t come across Venturus (my next stop).
